Long Beach State 7, UC Riverside 5 - Box Score
Long Beach, CA—One day after collecting just two hits in a 1-0, 12-inning loss to the Dirtbags, the Highlanders banged out nine safeties and scored five runs Saturday night. It wasn't enough, though, as LBSU reliever Matt Johnson allowed just one hit and one run over the last four-and-two-thirds innings and the Beach came away with the 7-5 win.
It took the Highlanders (15-14, 3-5) two batters to match their hit total from Friday evening, and by the time the top of the first was over, they led 1-0 on Tony Nix's one-out shot to left field which scored Ryan Goetz. The Dirtbags (18-15, 5-3) tied it up in the bottom of the first on an Ino Patron fielder's choice ground out, and took the lead in the second on a Michael Hill RBI triple.
A wild pitch scored Hill to give LBSU a 3-1 lead, and in the bottom of the third, Patron's double down the left field line plated Matt Duffy to put the Beach ahead by three.
After allowing four hits in the first, Long Beach State starter Shawn Stuart settled down giving up just one hit over the next three innings as the Dirtbags built their lead.
The Highlanders got to Stuart again in the top of the fifth, however. Hairgrove singled to left field, and Ryan Goetz reached when third baseman Hill couldn't handle his sac bunt attempt. Justin Shults followed with a single to right scoring Hairgrove, and after Tony Nix sac bunt put runners at second and third, David Andriese tripled to center to tie the game.
That ended Stuart's night as he was replaced by Matt Johnson (2-1). Johnson walked Dan Pellegrino but worked out of the jam without allowing any additional runs.
It didn't take long for Long Beach to retake the lead as Matt Hibbert opened the bottom of the fifth with a double to left, advanced to third on a Duffy infield single, and scored on a Jeff McNeil sacrifice fly.
That was all for UC Riverside starter Dustin Emmons (3-2) as Mark Garcia came on in relief, but he allowed back-to-back singles to Patron and MIke Marjama to make it 6-4 Dirtbags. After a Juan Avila strike out, Jeff Yamaguchi singled up the middle scoring Patron to put the Beach back up by three.
UCR got one back in the top of the sixth when Goetz' ground out scored Eddie Young who began the inning with a single to center, but Johnson set down 10 of the last 11 Highlanders to close out the win. Johnson struck out six batters on the evening while Stuart Kd eight in his 4.1 innings of work.
Long Beach State and UC Riverside tangle once again on Sunday at Blair Field, First pitch is slated for 1 pm PT.
