UC Riverside 3, CSU Bakersfield 0 - Box Score
Bakersfield, CA—Eddie Orozco allowed just three hits over six-and-two-thirds innings, and Dylan Stuart and Mitch Patito kept the Roadrunners off the board in the later innings as the Highlanders upended CSU Bakersfield, 3-0, Thursday evening in a non-conference matchup.
Orozco (2-1) came into the game having allowed just 24 hits in 28.0 innings this season boasting an earned run average of 2.57. The right-hander faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings, and didn't allow a runner into scoring position until the bottom of the fifth.
By that time, the Highlanders (17-14) led 1-0 having manufactured their first run in the top of the fourth off of CSUB starter Tommy Noenshell (5-4). Trevor Hairgrove led of the inning with a single to right center and stole second. A wild pitch moved him to third, and he scored on a Justin Shults ground out to short.
Bakersfield (24-9) threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, though, as Andrew Letourneau beat out an infield single with one out and advanced to third on an Orozco throwing error. Jeremy Rodriguez flied out to shallow left for the second out of the inning, and Martin Medina grounded out to first stranding Letourneau at third.
UC Riverside gave Orozco a three-run cushion in the top of the seventh sending seven men to the plate. Shults singled to the left side to open the inning, and after Tony Nix sacrificed him to second, David Andriese singled through the left side to put runners at the corners. A Vince Gonzalez fielder's choice scored Shults, and back-to-back singles by Kyle Boudreau and Bart Steponovich made it 3-0 UCR.
In the bottom of the seventh, Orozco lost his command walking the bases loaded, but Stuart came on in relief with two outs and got Ryan McIntyre to ground out to third to end the inning.
Hoenshell exited the game after the seventh having struck out nine and allowed seven hits. Nick Shannon took over in the eighth and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball leaving with two gone in the top of the ninth as the Highlanders put runners at first and second. But Steponovich fouled out to his catching counterpart to keep the UC Riverside lead at three.
The Roadrunners threatened again in the bottom of the eighth loading he bases with two outs as Stuart issued a walk and gave up two singles, but he struck out Kevin Younger to work his way out of the jam once again.
Patito came on to close the game out in the bottom of the ninth, and he allowed just an infield single in the middle of three strikeouts to earn his sixth save of the year.
