UC Irvine Two-Hits Highlanders In 12-0 Series-Opening Victory
5/20/2011 6:20:05 PM | Baseball
UC Irvine 12, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team welcomed the 16th ranked team in the nation, UC Irvine, to the Riverside Sports Complex Friday evening, and they ran into one of the top pitching performances of the season as Anteaters starter Matt Summers (9-2) was perfect through five and a third and settled for a two-hit shut out of the Highlanders.
UC Irvine (36-13, 14-5) scored two in the first and two in the third chasing UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese (4-5) with a four-run fourth. The right hander threw 83 pitches in three-plus innings and allowed 10 base hits. Mark Garcia came on in relief and allowed two more hits before picking up the third out of the inning.
The Highlanders (26-21, 8-11), meanwhile, were hitless through five innings and had hit just one ball out of the infield. Bart Steponovich finally dropped a one in the hits column for the home team when he laced a one out single to center in the bottom of the sixth.
Justin Shults recorded the second base knock of the night for UC Riverside with an infield single in the bottom of the seventh, but by that time, the Highlanders trailed 12-0. Jordan Leyland knocked in four of the Anteaters dozen runs, while Brian Hernandez scored four. Every UC Irvine starter, save for right fielder Sean Madigan, was credited with a base hit on the evening.
The Highlanders were two-hit on two previous occasions this season—at Long Beach State on April 15, and vs. #10 Cal State Fullerton on May 13.
The Highlanders and Anteaters square off against one another again on Saturday, May 21 at the Riverside Sports Complex. Assuming the world didn't end last night as predicted by certain religious sects, first pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
