1/29/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The host UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders, 66-52 at the Thunderdome in Goleta Thursday.
With the loss, UCR fell to 6-10 and 3-4 in the Big West. UCSB moved to 11-6, 5-3. The Gauchos were led by Brandon Fullove's 19 points. Senior Kevin Butler had 13 points and Nate Carter 12 in a losing effort. The Gauchos owned the boards, 45-19.
Things started off poorly for the Highlanders, who allowed the Gauchos to jump out to an 11-0 lead to open the game. However, UCR scored the next nine points, sparked in part by Kevin Butler's defensive play, which included a steal and a block of Nick Jones that led to fast break layups.
The half stayed close, with the Highlanders getting within three points several times, and entered halftime trailing 29-26. The key to the half was rebounding, as the Gauchos dominated, 22-11.
The Gauchos opened the second half with a 17-5 run that helped them jump out to a 46-31 lead. UCSB continued to pound the ball inside and dominated in rebounding. UCR went through a 5:10 span without scoring, but hit a trio of threes lated to cut the final margin to 66-52.
UCR next plays at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, January 31st.
