#10 Cal State Fullerton 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team welcomed the tenth ranked team in the nation, Cal State Fullerton, to the Riverside Sports Complex Friday evening for game one of their three-game Big West series, It was the Titans picking up the 4-1 win as Noe Ramirez, Dylan Floro, and Nick Ramirez combined on a two-hitter improving Fullerton to 31-13 overall and 12-4 in conference.
UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese came into the game having allowed just three earned runs over his last 33.0 innings for an earned run average of 0.84. The Titans got to him early though, opening the first with two singles and a sac bunt putting runners on second and third. After Andriese struck out Nick Ramirez, Carlos Lopez singled back up the box plating Ivory Thomas and Anthony Trajano for a 2-0 Fullerton lead.
Andriese breezed through the second inning, but ran into trouble again in the third. After Thomas grounded to short to begin the inning, Trajano singled to right, Pill drew a walk, and Nick Ramirez singled to right center to load the bases. He got Carlos Lopez to pop out to first, and Lorenzen struck out to end the threat.
Cal State Fullerton put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the fourth, but Andriese worked out of that jam as well.
The Highlanders finally got to Titans starter Noe Ramirez in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Goetz led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Justin Shults grounded out to second, and UCR had its first run of the game.
The Titans got that run back in the top of the fifth though, as Trajano, Pill and Ramirez each singled to open the inning. Ramirez's single up the middle scored Trajano to make it 3-1 Cal State Fullerton.
In the top of the seventh, the Titans loaded the bases once again, this time with two outs, before Andriese struck out Kegan Dale to end the inning.
Kevin Dickey took over for Andriese on the hill in the top of the eighth, and the Titans managed to load the bases against him as well. Dickey picked up the first out of the inning on a shallow fly ball to right, and appeared to be on his way to getting out of the inning after a strikeout of Ramirez. But he hit right fielder Anthony Hutting, who entered the game as a defensive replacement an inning earlier to increase the Fullerton lead to three and end the scoring for the night.
The Titans banged out 16 hits on the night, but they were all singles. They also left 16 runners on base for the game.
UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton square off again Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
