The host UC Riverside Highlanders lost to the visiting UC Irvine Anteaters, 66-61 in a Big West Conference game in front of 684 fans at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Wednesday.
UCR is 5-20, 1-10 in the Big West, while UCI improves to 12-15, 6-7.
Junior guard Larry Cunningham led the Highlanders with a game-high 21 points and senior guard Justin Bell had 19 points. UCR shot 36.1% (22-of-61) from the field and 29.4% (5-of-17) from the three-point line.
UC Irvine got 19 points each by Patrick Sanders and Nic Campbell, with the latter's three with 35 seconds left snapping a tie ball game and giving the Anteaters the lead for good. UCI shot 41.5% (22-of-53) from the field and 22.2% (4-of-18) from the three point line. Darren Fells had 14 points for UCI.
The game was tied 59-59 with one minute left on a Bell jumper, but Campbell drained an open three with 35 seconds left for a 62-59 lead. Bell was fouled with 27 seconds left and hit both his free throws, but Michael Hunter returned the favor with 27 seconds left.
UCR got the ball back, but Bell's rushed three from the top of the key missed and Hunter came back to drain a pair of free throws to ice the game.
UCR opened with a 7-2 lead, but UCI followed with a 13-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. UCR came back to tie it at 23-23 with 4:05 left on a 6-0 run by Justin Bell, who drained a three, then followed with a layup and a free throw to tie it up. But the Anteaters again got hot with a 10-4 run to end the half and the teams entered the intermission with UCI holding a 33-27 lead.
UCR sophomore guard Chris Johnson, one of the Highlanders' top scorers in conference play this year at 12.1 points per game, missed the game with lower back spasms.
