Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener 5-1 At CSU Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA—CSU Bakersfield's Gyasi Zardes recoded the first hat trick by a Roadrunners men's soccer player since 2001 as CSUB topped UC Riverside 5-1 in the season opener for both programs. (Box Score)
The Highlanders (0-1) found themselves down 3-0 before the first half had reached the midway point as Kory Kindle, Jesus Sanchez and Zardes each recorded goals for the Roadrunners. Zardes picked up his second score of the night in the 26th minute of play and CSUB (1-0) headed into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Cesar Diaz Pizzaro finally got the Highlanders on the board with 18:34 gone in the second thanks to a Juan Mendoza assist, but ten minutes later, Zardes scored his third goal of the match for the final 5-1 margin of victory.
The Highlanders return home this Thursday for a 7 pm meeting with Sacramento State.
