Valencia's Overtime Goal Gives Women's Soccer 2-1 Win Over North Texas
9/16/2011 3:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Albuquerque, New Mexico—Celina Valencia's goal with 6:44 gone in the first overtime Friday afternoon propelled the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team to a 2-1 win over North Texas in the first match for both clubs at the New Mexico NIKE Classic. It was the first goal of the Alhambra, CA freshman's collegiate career. (Box Score)
The Mean Green outshot the Highlanders 12-6 on the day, but it was the first shot of the extra period that proved to be the game-winner as Aaren Casimiro's cross from the far right side found Valencia in the box, and Valencia's shot beat North Texas keeper Jackie Kerestine for the victory. The win improved UC Riverside's record to 4-4-1 while North Texas fell to 5-2-1.
The Highlanders found themselves in a 1-0 hole late in the first as the Mean Green Kelsey Petty gathered a deflected ball and slotted it past the Highlanders' Jessica Olafsen with 35:57 gone in the match. The North Texas lead was short-lived, however, as Alex Quincey spotted Andrea Morales on the far right side of the box a mere 42 seconds later, and Morales's shot found the left corner of the net tying the match at one apiece.
The teams headed into halftime tied at one, and combined for just five shots in the second 45 minutes of play. Olafsen was credited with seven saves on the afternoon increasing her conference leading saves total to 39 on the year.
The Highlanders next take on host New Mexico on Sunday, September 18. Kick off is slated for noon PT.
