Phil Martin Earns Second Straight Big West Player Of The Week Award
1/16/2012 11:31:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside guard Phil Martin is the conference player of the week for games played January 9-15. It is the second consecutive honor for the Staten Island, NY native who joins Kyle Austin as the only member of the Highlanders to be so honored on three different occasions. Martin began the week by pouring in a career-high 33 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in UC Riverside's 79-70 overtime victory over UC Santa Barbara. Against the Gauchos, Martin scored 21 of UCR’s 33 first-half points, and in the overtime period, he scored four of the team’s first six and six of 16 overall to help the Highlanders pull away. The double-double against UCSB was his third of the season, and ran his string of consecutive 20+point performances to a UCR Division-I era best, four straight.
Against Cal Poly, Martin tied for game-high scoring honors with 13. In the second half, after the Mustangs cut a 15-point UCR advantage to three with 1:32 to go, Martin drained four free throws down the stretch to help the Highlanders secure the win.
Martin leads the Highlanders in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (5.5) on the year, and ranks second in the conference in scoring average, 12th in rebounding, first in free-throw percentage, and fourth in minutes played. He has eight 20+ point games and 14 double-digit scoring performances on the season
Martin has led the Highlanders in scoring in 13 of 18 games this season including the last five straight, and is averaging 24.2 points per game in conference play (second is UCSB’s Orlando Johnson at 18.3).
As a team, the Highlanders are 4-1 in conference for the first time ever in Big West play, and their overall mark of 10-8 is just one game behind the 2008-09 squad for the best 18-game start to a season during that same time period. UCR has won four straight games for just the third time in its D-I history—the team’s Division I record is five straight set in 2009-10—and the Highlanders have won four straight Big West games for the first time in their history.
UC Riverside hits the road this Wednesday, January 18 for a 7 pm tip at Cal State Fullerton.
