Moreno Valley, CA—Liz Aguilar is one proud mom. “She had five goals last weekend!” Aguilar said of her daughter, Janelle. “First time out. I was like, ‘Wow!’”
It’s crystal clear that her 6-year-old, a first-grader at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School in Moreno Valley, has a knack for the beautiful game.
Janelle dribbles with purpose up the line and seizes the chance — with some encouragement from UC Riverside women’s soccer player Shelley Brumbaugh — to shoot and score!
Then, Janelle, who is autistic, gravitates back to her parents and inhales the contents of a Capri Sun juice pouch, winded, thirsty and smiling.
