Bradshaw And Martin Combine To Score 34, But UC Irvine Wins 65-57
1/28/2012 4:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Irvine, CA—Kevin Bradshaw and Phil Martin combined to score 34 points on the night, but it wasn’t enough as the UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team lost a 65-57 decision at UC Irvine Saturday evening. The defeat dropped the Highlanders to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the Big West.
UCR erased a seven-point UC Irvine (8-13, 4-4) advantage and led by four, 51-47 with 8:02 to go in the game, but that’s when the Anteaters began wearing a path to the free throw line. Of their final 18 points, 12 came from the charity stripe.
Derick Flowers got the late UCI run started with a jumper, and Adam Folker tied the game with a pair of free throws with 5:56 to go. The team’s traded baskets the next three times down the court, with Martin’s jumper with 2:33 remaining putting the Highlanders back up two, 55-53. UC Riverside would never lead the rest of the way as the ‘Eaters closed the game on a 12-2 run. Flowers scored seven of his team-high 17 points from the free throw line during that streak.
Bradshaw came alive in the second half for the Highlanders scoring nine of his 15 after the break. He also grabbed eight rebounds in helping UC Riverside climb back into the game. But it was the UCR defense that really did the trick as UCI misfired on 19 of 27 shots in the second including 11 of 12 from long distance.
The Highlanders led by as many as seven early in the first period, but a 16-5 run gave the Anteaters a five-point cushion with 6:34 to go in the half. Irvine increased its lead to seven, 29-22, with 3:22 on the clock, but UCR scored seven of the final 10 points of the half, making it a 32-29 game at the half.
Martin led all scorers in the first with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field, while Michael Wilder paced the Anteaters with 10. UC Irvine connected on 12 of 25 shots in the first including four of eight from long distance.
The Highlanders return home this week for a pair of games beginning with a Thursday, February 2 tilt with Pacific. Tip is slated for 8 pm PT as the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team hosts Cal State Northridge that afternoon at 3 pm.
