Volleyball Drops Heart Breaking Five-Set Match At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team traveled to Cal Poly Friday evening searching for its first league win of the season, but lost a five-set match to the Mustangs at Mott Gym.
Cal Poly (2-18, 1-7) won the first set 25-21, but the Highlanders (5-16, 0-8) took a 2-1 lead in the match winning sets two and three 25-22 and 25-22. The Mustangs evened the set at 2-2 with a 26-24 fourth-set win, but UCR led at match-point, 15-14, late in the final set.
The Mustangs rallied to tie the set at 15, and scored the next two straight earning the victory with a final 17-15 fifth-set win.
Amanda Vialpando led UCR with 22 kills and 14 digs, while Ashley Cox had 11 kills and 20 digs.
After dropping set one, the Highlanders rallied back from a 14-10 deficit in the second set to go up 17-15. They then pushed their margin out to 21-17, but Cal Poly closed to just one, 23-22, late in the frame.
It was UCR's turn for a run, as a Vialpando kill put them up at set-point, 24-22, and block assists from Tyler Dorsey and Emily Borges gave UC Riverside the 25-22 win.
In set three, there were nine tie scores and four lead changes, but the blue and gold again came out on top, winning 25-22 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Highlanders almost took home the win in the fourth set, leading at match-point 24-23 following another Vialpando kill. Unfortunately, a 3-0 run by the Mustangs in the form of a block and two kills forced the match into five sets as CP won 26-24.
In the final frame, UCR came back from an 11-8 deficit to tie the set at 11, and rallied back from a match-point 14-13 deficit to go up 15-14. For the second set in a row, the Highlanders could not withstand a final comeback from Cal Poly as three straight points sealed the deal and lifted the Mustangs to the 17-15 victory.
UC Riverside continues its central coast swing with a 7 pm PT match at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
