Box Score - UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Riverside 1
Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (5-17, 0-9) concluded the first half of Big West Conference play Saturday evening with a 3-1 loss at UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome.
The Gauchos (12-12, 5-4) ran away with the first set, 25-14, but the next three sets were won by the slimmest of margins, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-23.
The teams traded points to open the first set, with neither squad leading by more than a pair. With UCR on top, 9-8, the Gauchos mounted a run, scoring seven straight to make it a 15-9 game.
An Amanda Vialpando kill ended the rally, but the Highlanders could not make up lost ground as UC Santa Barbara went on for the 25-14 win.
UC Riverside controlled the pace early in set two, opening a 3-0 lead and pushing it out to 10-6. UCSB eventually tied it at 13, and the teams went back and forth with seven ties scores from 17-17 to 23-23.
It was the Highlanders who reached 23 first, scoring on another Vialpando kill, but a Gauchos kill tied the set, and consecutive UCR errors proved fatal as UC Santa Barbara escaped with the 25-23 victory.
It was UCR's turn for a comeback in the third set, rallying from a 7-2 early deficit to eventually tie the set at 14. UCSB then went back up by two, 18-16, only to see the Highlanders even the set at 19.
The teams traded points until 22-22, when a Vialpando kill and a Megan Reza service ace put the blue and gold up at set-point, 24-22. A Gauchos point closed the gap to 24-23, but another Vialpando kill pulled the Highlanders within 2-1 in the match with a 25-23 win.
The fourth set produced 11 tie scores and seven lead changes, but it was UC Santa Barbara taking an 18-11 lead midway through.
The Highlanders did not give up, scoring eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 19. Vialpando had two service aces during that run, while UCR capitalized on five UCSB errors.
The teams went back and forth until they were again tied at 22, but this time it was the Gauchos who went up at set-point, 24-22, and held on for the 25-23 win.
Vialpando led all players with 20 kills while Ashley Cox added 16 for UC Riverside.
Next up for the Highlanders is a three-match home stand beginning with an October 26 match against Pacific at 7 pm at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
