Box Score—Long Beach State 3, UC Riverside 0
Long Beach State—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team looked to extend its Big West winning streak to two in a row Saturday evening, but the Long Beach State 49ers came away with the 25-14, 25-17 and 25-23 sweep.
Freshman Ashlex Cox led all players with 13 kills and 14 digs, while Amanda Vialpando added 11 kills for the Highlanders (7-21, 1-13).
The teams traded points in the early going in set one, with five tie scores and three lead changes through 5-5. The 49ers (15-11, 10-5) then turned a 7-6 lead into an 11-6 advantage, and pushed their margin out to 19-9 before ultimately winning 25-14.
UC Riverside was again within striking distance midway through set two, down 11-9, before Long Beach State scored three straight and seven of the next 10 points to open an 18-12 lead.
The Highlanders could not recover, falling behind by as much as nine points in the 25-17 loss.
UCR battled the Beach with 11 tie scores in the third set before going up 23-20 late in the frame. It appeared as though the Highlanders would force a fourth set, but the 49ers scored three straight to tie the set at 23.
A UC Riverside timeout did not stop the Long Beach State momentum, as the 49ers came out of the break scoring two more points to steal the 25-23 win.
Next up for the Highlanders is a home match against UC Santa Barbara on Friday, November 16 at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
