Riverside, CA—Freshman Ashley Cox recorded a career-high 29 kills Friday evening, but it wasn't enough as the UC Riverside Volleyball Team lost a five-set heartbreaker, 25-23, 16-25, 25-27, 25-23 and 15-11 to UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference action at the SRC Arena.

UC Riverside had the early 2-0 lead in set one, but the Gauchos went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead. With UCSB leading 9-3, the Highlanders mounted a comeback, scoring nine of the next 12 points to tie the set at 12 apiece.
With the set tied at 14, UC Santa Barbara scored four unanswered going up 18-14. UC Riverside again rallied, outscoing the Gauchos 6-1 to take a 20-19 lead.

Set three was a thriller, as the teams battled back and forth late in the frame. With UCSB leading 20-17, the Highlanders scored five straight to go up 22-20. A 4-0 Gauchos run then ensued, but block assists from Tyler Dorsey and McKoy sandwiched around a McKoy kill put UC Riverside on top, 25-24.
