UC Riverside took a 4-1 lead early in set two thanks to two kills and two CSUB errors. The Roadrunners rallied at that point, however, scoring six consecutive to go up 7-4. CSU Bakersfield then opened a six point lead, 11-5, and still led 13-8 before the Highlanders put on a run of of their own.
Three UCR kills combined with a Cox service ace and another Runnners error cut the gap to two, 14-12, but CSUB pushed the lead back to four. The Highlanders again closed to two on three more occasions, the last at 20-18, but could not muster another rally as the Roadrunners tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory.
The third set was a back and forth battle with 11 tie scores and six lead changes. Six of those ties scores were through 9-9, when the Highlanders then scored three straight to go up 12-9. CSU Bakersfield eventually went up 16-14 after scoring four consecutive, but UCR scored four of the next five points to go up 18-17.
Another lead change made it 19-18 Runners, but UC Riverside used a Vialpando kill and three CSUB errors to take a 22-19 advantage. CSU Bakersfield then scored three of the next four points to close to one, 23-22, prompting a Highlanders timeout.
The blue and gold came out of the break energized and closed out the frame on a Cox kill and another Roadrunners error to win 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The teams battled it out in the fourth set, with neither squad leading by more than three points until late in the frame. UCR had an 18-17 lead, and scored three consecutive to go up 21-17. The Highlanders still led by four, 23-19, when the Runners scored two points to close to 23-21.
After a UC Riverside timeout, a Dorsey kill gave UCR match-point, 24-21, and an attack error by CSUB sealed the 25-21 victory.
Next up for the Highlanders is a return to Big West Conference play at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, November 3 at 7 pm PT in Fullerton, CA.
