Second Half Rally Falls Short For Women's Hoops In 72-68 Loss To Princeton

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team rallied back from a 20-point first half deficit to cut the Princeton lead to four on two occasions in the second half, but could not complete the comeback as the Tigers held on for the 72-68 victory Friday evening at the SRC Arena.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored a career-high 31 points, while Brittany Crain added a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Kiara Harewood also grabbed 12 rebounds.
After falling behind 7-2 early in the first half, the Highlanders scored eight straight points to take a 10-7 lead at the 13:50 mark. But it was a a 20-0 run by the Tigers that broke open the game, turning a 15-10 UCR advantage into a 30-15 Princeton lead with 5:40 to go in the half.
The Tigers pushed their lead out to 20, 39-19, with 2:51 left in the period, but the Highlanders whittled the lead down to 12, 41-29, as Nottingham nailed a three-pointer as time expired at the half.
With Princeton leading 50-35 with 16:25 remaining, the Highlanders put on a spurt, scoring 15 of the next 19 points to close to just four, 54-50, at the 11:44 juncture. Nottingham hit two three-pointers while Harewood added one from beyond the arc during that run.
The teams traded points until the Tigers went back up by double-figures on multiple occasions, the last at 72-60 with 3:20 to go. Another three-pointer from Nottingham started an 8-0 run by UC Riverside as the gap was again to cut to four, 72-68, with four seconds remaining.
However, father time was on the side of Princeton, as the Highlanders did not have enough ticks left on the clock to complete their comeback, as the Tigers held on for the 72-68 victory.
Niveen Rasheed led Princeton with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Alex Wheatly added 13 points.
The Tigers outshot the Highlanders, 42.4 percent to 39.6 percent, but UCR hit 55.6 percent of its long balls while limiting Princeton to 38.9 percent.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Wednesday, November 28 game against Pac-12 Washington State at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
