Second Half Run Not Enough As Men's Basketball Falls 81-69 To Texas State

Anchorage, AK—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team cut an 18-point lead to five early in the second half, but that was as close as the Highlanders would get as they dropped an 81-69 decision to Texas State in the final game of the 2012 CARRS/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout for both cliubs (Box Score).
Trailing by 12 at the half, 47-35, UCR (1-6) opened the second stanza by forcing five Bobcats missed shots and scoring on a trio of lay ups by Chris Patton, Davin Guinn and Chris Harriel, and a free throw by Lucas Devenny, to cut the lead to five at 47-42 with 18:24 to go.
It was still just an eight-point Texas State (3-3) advantage with 12:23 on the clock when the Bobcats scored six unanswered points to push the lead back into double digits for good. Four of those points came on free throws, which became a common theme in the second period as the teams combined to commit 33 personal fouls and take 41 free throws.
The Highlanders dug themselves a hole early in the game as Texas State scored 20 of the first 22 points in the first five-plus minutes of play. A pair of Josh Fox free throws ended the run, and UC Riverside went on a 14-4 burst of its own to close the deficit to eight at 24-16. Five member of the Highlanders scored during the run led by Harriel's five points.
After the Bobcats pushed their lead back out to 16, UCR scored the final four points of the period make it a 12-point lead at halftime. Harriel scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Dayton Boddie and Guinn each posted career scoring highs in the game with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Highlanders return home this week for a Saturday, December 1 meeting with Northern Colorado. Tip at the SRC Arena is slated for 7 pm PT.
