Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team took a 28-19 lead into the half Friday evening in the 2012-13 season opener against Gonzaga, but the Bulldogs outscored the Highlanders by 16 points in the second half to escape with a 60-53 victory.
UCR (0-1) outshot the Zags (1-0) 40 percent to 24 percent in the first half, but Gonzaga hit more than half of its field goals in the second period, while forcing 24 turnovers to come from behind and seal the win.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first period until a three-pointer by Tre'Shonti Nottingham at the 7:26 mark put UCR up 17-13. The Bulldogs closed to one, 17-16, but the Highlanders scored 11 of the next 14 points to close out the half with a 28-19 margin.
Gonzaga quickly cut the UC Riverside lead to one, 28-27, by opening the second half on a 8-0 run. The Highlanders rallied and a three-pointer by Brittany Crain, three free throws by Nottingham, and a Dynese Adams jumper put UCR back on top by eight, 36-28.
The Bulldogs kept pressing, however, eventually tying the game at 39 with 10:50 remaining. UC Riverside again made a run, scoring eight straight points over the next four minutes to go up 46-39.
The game see-sawed yet again, with Gonzaga tying things up at 49 with just over five minutes to go. The Bulldogs then went up for good with a layup by Sunny Greinacher at the 4:50 mark, 51-49, as the Highlanders could never get closer than one the rest of the way.
"I thought it was a game of two halfs," Head Coach John Margaritis stated. "We battled all the way to the very end."
Nottingham led all players with 20 points with Crain adding 14 and eight rebounds. Keani Albanez had 17 points to lead the Bulldogs.
For the game, the Highlanders hit 40 percent of their shots while the Zags hit 38 percent.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Monday, November 12 game at Pepperdine. Tip is scheduled for 7 pm PT in Malibu, CA.
