Box Score - Sacramento State 2, UC Riverside 0
Box Score - North Dakota State 5, UC Riverside 4
Fresno, CA—The UC Riverside softball team opened up the 2012 season on Friday with losses to Sacramento State and North Dakota State in the first day of the Fresno State Tournament.
In the top of the second against the Hornets, UCR had a great opportunity to get on board with the bases loaded and nobody out. Jessica Vasser started off the inning with a double, and Alexis Pickett was walked to make it first and second.
Dionne Anderson then singled to second base, safely advancing each runner to load the bases. However, the Highlanders could not capitalize as three consecutive outs ended the inning.
In the fourth, Sacramento State went up 1-0 when pinch-runner Nicole Clark scored on Devin Caldwell's double to right center. Sac State made it 2-0 two innings later as they plated another run, again from the bat of Caldwell as her bunt scored Alyssa Nakken from third base.
The 2-0 score would hold as UC Riverside was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
Jordyn McDonald picked up the loss for the Highlanders, while Taylor Stroud earned the win for the Hornets.
In the next game, UCR got things going early against North Dakota State, plating three runs in the second inning.
Taylor Alvarez led off the inning with a single to third base, and advanced to second. Dionne Anderson was then walked on four straight pitches to put runners at first and second.
Halle Luna swung on an 0-2 count and reached base safely after an error by the NDSU short stop. Luna would eventually reach second, advancing Anderson to third base and scoring Alvarez for UCR's first run of the season.
A batter later, Kayla White tripled to right center field, scoring both runners to lift the Highlanders to a 3-0 advantage.
The lead was shortlived, however, as the Bison put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the same inning. With the bases loaded, Taylor Mortenson doubled to center field, scoring all three runners and tying the game at 3-3.
UC Riverside retook the lead two innings later, as Luna scored on a Pickett single to make it 4-3.
North Dakota State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fouth inning, however, retaking the lead 5-4, and holding on for the victory.
Alvarez was saddled with the loss for UC Riverside, while Whitney Johnson picked up the win for the Bison.
The Highlanders continue play at the Fresno State Tournament on Saturday with games against Toledo and the host Bulldogs.
