Game 1 Box Score - UC Riverside 5, BYU 0
Game 2 Box Score - BYU 6, UC Riverside 2
Riverside, CA—UC Riverside's Dylan Stuart pitched a complete game five-hitter on Friday afternoon in game one of a twin bill as the Highlanders opened the 2012 season with a 5-0 victory over BYU at the Riverside Sports Complex. They weren't as fortunate in the nightcap, however, as the Cougars evened the series witha 6-2 victory. The final game of the three-game series is slated for Saturday, February 18 beginning at noon.
Stuart (1-0) got into a bit of a jam in the first inning as the Cougars put runners on first and third with two outs, but the sophomore left hander struck out Jaycob Brugman to get out of the inning.
UC Riverside did most of its damage in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits and one BYU error. Vince Gonzalez drew a walk to open the inning, and Kyle Boudreau laced a double to center field, allowing Gonzalez to score for the 1-0 lead.
Phil Holinsworth then reached on an error by Cougars starting pitcher Chris Capper, and Drake Zarate drew a walk to load the bases. After an out, Devon Bolasky hit a 2-RBI single to center field as the lead increased to 3-0.
The Highlanders weren't done, however, as an Eddie Young single scored Zarate to make it 4-0. Cougars starter Chris Capper was responsible for all four runs allowing five hits and three walks in 5.0 innings of work.
UC Riverside added an insurance run in the sixth inning off of relief pitcher Matt Milke as Zarate scored his second run of the game, coming home on a wild pitch from Chris Howard.
Stuart struck out seven on the day and walked just one, while not allowing a runner to advance past second base after the first inning.
In game two, the Highlanders staked starter Eddie Orozco (0-1) to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Bolasky doubled down the left field line to open the frame, and Holinsworth put runners on the corners with an infield single to short. Bolasky came home on a Clayton Prestridge double play grounder, and Cougars starter Mark Anderson (1-0) worked his way out of the inning by striking out Vince Gonzalez.
Orozco got the first two runners in the top of the second, but issued a two-out walk to Kelton Caldwell and allowed a single to Wes Guenther to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch brought Caldwell home and moved Guenther to second, and Stephen Wells' double down the right field line put BYU on top, 2-1.
The Cougars and Highlanders each scored a single run in the third, but BYU tacked on additional runs in the fourth and fifth to go up 5-2. Orozco's night ended in the fifth as he gave way to Mark Garcia after giving up nine hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. Garcia threw 2.2 scoreless innings, but the Cougars touched Gavin Mills for a run in the eighth for the eventual 6-2 victory.
