Softball Drops Pair To San Jose State, #1 Cal At UNLV Tournament
2/18/2012 5:46:00 PM | Softball
Cal 10, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
San Jose State 9, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Softball Team continued its weekend of competition at the UNLV Lousville Slugger Desert Classic on Saturday, dropping a 10-0 decision to Cal, the top-ranked team in the nation, and San Jose State.
Jordyn McDonald got the start for the Highlanders against Cal, but the Bears got to her early scoring two runs in the first and six in the second. McDonald gave way to Taylor Alvarez with two outs in the second, and the freshman from Canyon Lake, CA fared better allowing two runs in two and a third innings while striking out a pair.
Unfortunately, the UCR batters couldn't solve Cal's Valeria Arioto who scattered three hits in four innings, striking out five and not walking a single batter. Arianna Erceg pitched the fifth for the Bears retiring the Highlanders in order to secure the 10-0 win.
Amy Lwin took to the circle for game two allowing two hits and two runs through three innings of work. The Spartan offense got on track in the fourth though as three singles and an error put San Jose State up 3-0 and loaded the bases for Markesha Collins. Collins effectively put the game out of reach with one swing of the bat as she homered to right field to make it 7-0 Spartans.
UC Riverside got one back in the bottom of the fourth as Kayla White led off the inning with a double and Brittany Keeney moved her to third with a sac bunt. Following walks to Jessica Vasser and Alexis Pickett that loaded the bases, Kaylie Atkinson singled through the left side plating White. Jojo Mendoza popped up the catcher, and Alvarez struck out swinging to end the threat.
Casey Suda came on in relief of Lwin in the top of the fifth and allowed single runs in the fifth and sixth for the final 9-1 score.
The Highlanders final game of the tournament is slated for Sunday, February 19 at 9 am against Utah.
