Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team hits the road for the first time in 2012, heading east to Arizona State where they will play a three-game series with the Sun Devils beginning Friday, February 23 at Packard Stadium. First pitch is slated for 5:30 pm PT.
The Highlanders weekend rotation will remain the same as last week's with Dylan Stuart (1-0, 0.00) getting the nod on Friday, Eddie Orozco (0-1, 1.80) taking the mound on Saturday at noon and Trevor Frank climbing the hill on Sunday at 11:30 am.
The Sun Devils have won six straight against UC Riverside and 33 of the 38 meetings between the clubs all-time. Arizona State was a frequent participant in the Riverside Baseball Invitational held from 1967 through 1980, 1982 through 1987, and periodically through the 1990s and 2000s. The Highlanders last win over ASU came on January 29, 1990 in an 8-5, 11-inning victory at Arizona State.
UC Riverside evened its record on the year to 2-2 on Tuesday evening with a 7-1 win over visiting San Diego State. Mitch Patito got the win in his first collegiate start after two years coming out of the bullpen. He went five innings and gave up just one hit while striking out five.
Devyn Bolasky leads the Highlanders bat brigade raking at a .600 clip with an on base percentage and slugging percentage of .667 each.
Arizona State is 3-0 on the young season following a season-opening sweep of Western Michigan that saw them outscore the Broncos 10-0, 13-0 and 17-2. Eleven members of the squad are hitting .333 or better led by Max Rossiter's .750 batting average. The Sun Devils slugged four home runs in the three games, while their pitching staff produced a microscopic earned run average of 0.33 striking out 33 batters in 27.0 innings of work.
ASU will throw right-hander Brady Rodgers (1-0, 0.00) on Friday, lefty Adam McCreery (1-0, 0.00) on Saturday and righty Trevor Williams (1-0, 0.00) on Sunday.
