San Diego Scores Five Over Final Two Innings In 8-5 Win Over UCR
2/28/2012 10:13:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team came back from three runs down to take a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, but the San Diego Toreros rallied for two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to pick up an 8-5 win over the Highlanders. (Box Score)
Mitch Patito got the start for UCR (3-5) and looked to be in complete command early as he struck out the side in the first inning. But he began to struggle in the second giving up single runs over the next three innings as the Toreros built a 3-0 lead through three and a half.
The lead didn't last long, however, as the Highlanders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. They did so against Trevor Bayless, San Diego's fourth pitcher of the day, as the Toreros entered the game planning on throwing a different pitcher each inning. Bayless only lasted one third of an inning, though, as Cody Hough drew a lead-off walk, Eddie Young doubled to right, and Joey Gallaway brought the pair home with a triple to left.
A walk to Bart Steponovich ended Bayless's night, and Gallaway came home two hitters later on an error by USD third baseman Kris Bryant
The Highlanders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Vince Gonzalez reached on an infield single, Hough drew another walk, and Young sacrificed them up 90 feet. Gallaway loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch, and Nick Vilter's sac fly made it 4-3 Highlanders.
In the bottom of the seventh, UC Riverside tacked on what it thought would be an insurance run when Vilter's single scored Hough, who opened the inning getting hit by a pitch.
Mark Garcia threw the fifth through seventh innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. Ben Doucette came on to start the top of the eighth, but the Toreros touched him for consecutive singles to start the inning. A sac bunt put runners on second and third, Andrew Daniel's ground out scored Corey LaVier, and Julian Duran's pinch-hit single tied the game at five.
Joie Dunyon took over for Doucette with two outs in the eighth and got out of the inning, but in the top of the ninth he walked the lead-off batter and gave up a one-out RBI double to Bryant to put the Toreros on top, 6-5. LaVier singled to left center to make it 7-5 USD, and after Bryan Haar doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third, Gavin Mills came in to relieve Dunyon. He got Louis Lechich to pop up to left, but it was deep enough to score Grant Melker with San Diego's eighth run of the night.
The Highlanders got the lead-off man on in the bottom of the ninth as Hough got plunked, but the next three batters wre retired in order, and the Toeros had their sixth win of the season in hand.
