Box Score - Colorado State 10, UC Riverside 2 (6 innings)
Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Brown 1
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team rallied back from a 10-2 loss to Colorado State in the first game on Saturday to defeat Brown 3-1 in the nightcap at Amy S. Harrison Field on day two of the UCR Tournament.
Against Brown, the Bears got on board first with a solo shot over the left field fence. The Highlanders tied it an inning later as Ariel Shore tripled, and Jojo Mendoza's RBI single brought her home.
UCR took the lead in the third, 2-1, after consecutive singles from Kayla White and Dionne Anderson. That would prove to be the game-winning run as the Highlanders tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, as Shore and Mendoza again recorded back-to-back hits as the lead grew to 3-1.
The Bears were held without another run after the first inning as UCR starting pitcher Casey Suda alllowed just six hits overall. Suda earned the win, pitching all seven innings while striking out two.
In the first game, UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald found herself in a jam in the top of the first, allowing a single and a walk to open the frame. With the bases loaded later in the inning, McDonald allowed her third walk of game as the Rams took a 1-0 lead.
McDonald settled down in the second, but in the third, the bases were again loaded, and with two outs, Chelsea Biglow hit a grand slam making it a 5-0 ballgame. The Rams added another run in the fourth as Cassy Mosser homered to left field as CSU went up 6-0.
The Highlanders got two runs back in the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 6-2. Shore was struck out, but CSU's catcher dropped the ball and Shore made it safely to first on the error. Yesenia Duenas then got hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs.
McDonald laid down a sac bunt to advance both runners, and White's RBI ground out plated Shore for the Highlanders first run. Anderson then singled to the pitcher, allowing Duenas to score from third base.
However, Colorado State wasn't done hitting, as they scored four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 10-2. UC Riverside got a runner on base in the bottom of that frame, but could not capitalize as the Rams won in six innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Due to incoming inclement weather, the UCR Tournament schedule has been altered for Sunday. The Highlanders will face off against Santa Clara at 8:30 am followed by Colorado State and Brown at 11:00 am, and UCR vs. CSU at 1:30 pm.
