Box Score - UC Riverside 7, Santa Clara 4
Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Colorado State 1
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team concluded play at the UCR Tournament on Sunday with wins over Santa Clara, 7-4, and Colorado State, 3-1, at Amy S. Harrison Field.
Santa Clara got on board in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. With one out, Jamie Wallis was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelly Scribner then doubled to right center for the RBI as Wallis came around to score.
The Broncos lead was shortlived, however, as UCR came back to score three runs in the bottom of the first.
With one out, Dionne Anderson hit a blooper over second base, and Brittany Keeney reached base safely after laying down a bunt. Jessica Vasser then tripled down the right field line scoring both runners for a 2-1 advantage.
Alexis Pickett continued the Highlanders hitting, lacing a single to right field allowing Vasser to score from third for the 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, Santa Clara tied the game in the third with two runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Breezy Bernard fouled out to right field for an RBI sacrifice.
A walk to Briana Knight loaded the bases for a second time, and a walked to Jenna Krummen made it a 3-3 ballgame.
The Highlanders threatened in the bottom half of that frame, but could not convert with the bases loaded and two outs. Kayla White put the Highlanders on top an inning later, though, blasting a solo shot over the centerfield fence for a 4-3 lead.
The Broncos tied it a half inning later, and UCR starting pitcher Taylor Alvarez ran into some trouble in the sixth allowing a lead-off double and a walk. Alvarez got the next three batters out, however, as the game entered the bottom of the sixth still tied at four.
UC Riverside quickly retook the lead that frame, as consecutive singles from Yesenia Duenas, pinch-hitter Jojo Mendoza, and White made it a 6-4 game. With White on third and one out, Keeney singled through the left side, plating the final run of the inning for the 7-4 advantage.
Alvarez allowed a leadoff walk in the seventh, but retired the next three batters in order to earn the win. White led the team with three RBI while Keeney went 3-for-4.
UC Riverside faced off against Colorado State in the final game of the UCR Tournament, looking to avenge a 10-2 loss from Saturday.
The Rams scored a single run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders could not tie it a half inning later as they stranded a runner on third.
UC Riverside took the lead in the fourth, however, plating three runs to go up 3-1. Keeney led off the frame with a double, and was replaced on the bathpaths by Halle Luna. Vasser then drew a walk, and Alexis Pickett singled up the middle tying the game at one as Luna came home.
Kaylie Atkinson recorded the third hit of the inning as her extra base hit bounced just before the fence and went over, allowing both Vasser and Pickett to score as UCR's lead reached 3-1. Meanwhile, the inclement weather that had threatened all day finally starting coming, as the inning was played in a light rain.
The rain was intermittent the rest of the way, but UCR starter Amy Lwin shut down the Rams as she allowed just two hits over the final three innings for the victory.
The Highlanders now prepare for a doubleheader with CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, March 28 at 1:00 pm in Riverside, CA.
