Box Score - UC Riverside 7, Eastern Kentucky 6
Box Score - UC Riverside 16, Eastern Kentucky 8 (6 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team hit three home runs in each of its games on Wednesday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep over Eastern Kentucky, 7-6 and 16-8 (in six innings) at Amy S. Harrison Field.
In game one, UCR got on board early with back-to-back homers from Brittany Keeney and Jessica Vasser in the bottom of the first.
With one out in the second, Ariel Shore tripled to right center, and came home on Yesenia Duenas' RBI single. Duenas then stole second, and came home on Kayla White's single down the right field line making in 4-0.
In the third, Keeney drove another ball over the left field fence, hitting her second homer of the game as the Highlanders' advantage increased to 5-0.
Meanwhile, UCR starter Jordyn McDonald allowed just one baserunner through the first three innings.
Eastern Kentucky finally touched McDonald in the fourth inning, plating a single run, and added another solo run in the fifth.
The Highlanders matched those runs by scoring two in their respective fifth inning. White led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
After an out, Keeney continued her hot hitting, lacing a triple down the right field line and sending White home. Jessica Vasser's subsequent sac fly allowed Keeney to score, sending UCR into the sixth inning with a 7-2 advantage.
However, the wheels came off for the Highlanders in that frame, as the Colonels made it a close ballgame by scoring four runs on five hits and one error.
UC Riverside was able to get out of the inning still leading 7-6, and McDonald pitched a scoreless seventh as the team held on for the 7-6 victory.
In the second game, the Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but White hit a solo home run in UCR's bottom of the first to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
The Highlanders scored two additional runs in the second, taking a 3-2 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Halle Luna's RBI single scored one run, and White's ground out to the short stop scored the second.
EKU got one run back in the top of the third, but UCR exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third, opening a 7-3 lead.
The Highlanders did all their scoring with two outs gone by in the inning. Pickett started off the rally by drawing a walk, and advanced to third after Duenas reached on an error.
Shore then singled to bring home one run, and Kaylie Atkinson belted a home run to centerfield, picking up three RBI as the score increased to 7-3.
Eastern Kentucky countered with a two-out rally of its own in the next inning, scoring three runs to cut the advantage to 7-6. The Colonials continued their scoring an inning later, plating two unearned runs to take an 8-7 lead.
The Highlanders scored the equalizer in the bottom of the fifth, and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on White's second homer of the day, making it 9-8.
UC Riverside's bat were unleashed after that, though, as the team put seven more runs across the board, and scored eight total in that inning. UC Riverside batted around the order, and five different players recorded a hit.
The game ended with the Highlanders mercy-ruling EKU, as they led by eight runs in the sixth inning.
Taylor Alvarez picked up the win for UCR, as she was the pitcher of record when the Highlanders took the lead for good.
The Highlanders now host their third tournament of the 2012 season, the Amy S. Harrison Classic, this Friday-Sunday in Riverside.
