Riverside—It's been seven long years, but the UC Riverside Track & Field programs are once again hosting a meet on campus following the renovation of the UC Riverside Track Facility. The dedication of the facility was held on Friday, March 2 (Watch The Ceremony), and the Highlanders host UC Santa Barbara this Saturday, March 10 from 12 - 4:30 pm.
The Highlanders completed the renovation in the fall of 2011 thanks to UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White's appearence on the CBS reality show "Undercover Boss" in May of 2011. (Watch The Promo Video)
Disguised as a coach looking to learn the ins and outs of intercollegiate track & field, White became aware of the poor condition of the old track facility, and at the conclusion of the show, pledged the funds necessary to build the new stadium. (View Renovation Photo Gallery)
Now the Highlanders are training on a brand new, eight-lane, Rekortan M99 world championship suface with an additional inside lane for jogging. The sod on the infield was completey re-done, and the team's throwers now have their own practice area down by the soccer field. The old wooden bleachers were replaced with new aluminum seating.
“The new track facility is remarkably overdue. We are now, for the first time in many years, able to host home meets so our student-athletes can perform in front of their friends, family and the campus community,” White said. “It has a state-of-the-art surface, allowing for fewer stress-induced injuries and better training, permitting these men and women to achieve their highest potential. That is what a UC experience should always be.”
The renovation has also enabled the Athletics Department to re-open the facility to the student body and the general public. During the academic year, the facility is open from 9 am - 5 pm weekdays, excluding campus holidays, event days and sanctioned practices or competitions by the UC Riverside Track & Field program. During the summer, the facility is open from 5-8 pm on weekdays, excluding campus holidays and event days.
