Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost the series finale to UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference action on Sunday afternoon, 3-1, at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders fall to 18-23 overall and 1-8 in league play, while the Gauchos improve to 21-25, 6-3.
UC Santa Barbara jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Allison Taylor's single scored Brooke Pewtich from second. The Gauchos tacked on another run in the fourth, as Lainey DePompa homered to left field for a 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders cut the advantage to 2-1 in the bottom of that frame as Yesenia Duenas laid down a squeeze bunt as Ariel Shore raced home from third.
UCSB got that run back in the fifth, however, as a wild pitch with the bases loaded from UCR relief pitcher Jordyn McDonald made it a 3-1 ballgame.
The Highlanders were retired in order in the last three innings, as any attempt to tie the game fell short.
UCR starting pitcher Casey Suda was saddled with the loss, tossing 4.1 innings and giving up the three runs. Shelby Wisdom earned the win in the circle for the Gauchos, pitching all seven innings while allowing three hits and the one run.
The Highlanders now hit the road for a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal State Fullerton beginning on Saturday, April 21 at 4:00 pm in Fullerton, CA.
