Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team hoped to take another step closer to the upper division of the Big West Conference Friday evening, but it was the UC Irvine Anteaters pounding out 13 hits en route to a 9-2 victory.
Things looked good for the Highlanders (14-21, 4-6) in the early going as Eddie Young got the game started with an infield single to short, and Phil Holinsworth sacrificed him to second. Vince Gonzalez then singled to left scoring Young. David Andriese followed with a ground out to third moving Gonzalez to second, and Anteaters third baseman Taylor Sparks couldn't handle Clayton Prestridge's grounder which allowed Gonzalez to score.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, they would not record another base hit until the sixth inning.
By that time, UC Irvine (21-17, 6-7) had built a 6-2 lead touching UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart (4-5) for nine hits and a walk in four-and-two-thirds innings and six runs, four of them earned.
Gonzalez broke the Highlanders dry spell with a one-out, infield single, but he as stranded at first.
Gavin Mills took over for Stuart in the fifth, and gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth before giving way to Zach Varela who threw a scoreless seventh.
Kevin Sprague got the call in the eighth giving up a single run or the final 9-2 margin of victory.
Andrew Thurman (5-2) got the win for the 'Eaters scattering five hits and a walk while striking out six in a complete-game effort.
The Highlanders and Anteaters play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, April 28 with first pitch slated for 1 pm PT.
