Box Score - Long Beach State 10, UC Riverside 4
Box Score - Long Beach State 1, UC Riverside 0
Long Beach State, CA - The UC Riverside softball team dropped a doubleheader to Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon, a 10-4 slugfest in the first game and a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the second game, at 49er Softball Complex in Big West Conference action.
In game one, the Highlanders (20-26, 3-11) got out on top early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Kayla White led off the frame by reaching on an error, and advanced to second on Ariel Shore's single.
After an out, defending Big West Player of the Week Jessica Vasser doubled to right field, scoring White.
With two outs, Dionne Anderson singled up the middle, scoring Shore and Vasser as the lead grew to 3-0. Jordyn McDonald then reached on a second LBSU error and advanced to second as Anderson came around to score for the 4-0 advantage.
UCR's lead would be shortlived, however, as Long Beach State (22-22, 10-4) answered with a seven-spot in the second inning. Casey Suda gave up three straight hits to open the frame as the lead was cut to 4-1.
With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice combined with an error halved the lead, and a bases-loaded walk made it a 4-3 ballgame. Hannah De Gaetano then hit a bases-clearing double as the 49ers went up 6-4.
LBSU batted around the order as Leilani Tupua-Tautal singled for the second time that inning, scoring the runner on second for the 7-4 advantage.
Long Beach State tacked on another two runs in the next inning off relief pitcher McDonald, both on bases-loaded fielder's choices. The 49ers added a solo run in the fifth as the lead peaked at 10-4.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders left three stranded on base in the second inning, and had one baserunner on base through the seventh. Down to their last three outs, UCR put runners at second and third, but could not score any as LBSU took game one, 10-4.
Suda was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs, but only one earned, while Taylor Petty picked up the win for the 49ers.
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel, with only six hits combined between the teams.
LBSU's De Gaetano blasted a solo home run in fourth inning to account for the lone run of the game. The Highlanders could not manufacture any runs, putting just four runners on base the entire game.
Erin Jones-Wesley earned the win in the circle for Long Beach, while Taylor Alvarez picked up the loss in the 1-0 game.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:00 pm in Long Beach, CA.
