Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Baseball Team traveled to UNLV Tuesday to try and stop a season-long four-game losing streak. Instead, the Rebels banged out 13 hits against Highlanders pitching on their way to a 10-1 victory.
With five games on the docket this week for UCR (13-25), Dylan Stuart (4-6) moved out of his customary Friday night spot in the rotation to get the start, but UNLV strung three hits together in the bottom of the first to plate a pair of runs off the left-hander in the bottom of the first inning.
The sophomore settled down after that, retiring the Rebels in order in the second and third, and in the top of the fourth, UC Riverside got on the board thanks to back-to-back doubles by Clayton Prestridge and Phil Holinsworth, and an RBI groundout by Kyle Boudreau.
The Rebels (21-24) got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, however, and the heels came off in the bottom of the fifth with UNLV putting a seven spot on the board to go up 10-1.
Stuart got the first two outs of the inning before giving way to Antonio Gonzales, but the reliever was unable tor record an out giving up two hits and a walk to the three batters he faced.
Zach Varela got the final out of the inning but the damage was done,
The Highlanders and Rebels square off against one another again Wednesday afternoon beginning at 3:05 pm.
