Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team sent Dylan Stuart to the mound on Sunday afternoon to try and stop the Highlanders' five-game Big West skid, and the sophomore left-hander responded by scattering four hits in eight innings as UCR picked up a 3-1 win over visiting Cal State Northridge. For the third time in as many games, it was the Matadors (20-23, 7-8) who scored first as Eddie Young's error with two outs in the top of the first allowed Adam Barry to reach base, and Miles Williams brought him home with a double to right center field.
The Highlanders (16-26, 5-10) bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Clayton Prestridge led off the inning with a single to left, and Kyle Boudreau doubled to right center to tie the game. After Drake Zarate drew a walk, Alex Rubanowitz sacrificed Boudreau and Zarate up 90 feet, and Young sac fly to center put UCR on top, 2-1.
Stuart (5-6) allowed just one total base runner in the second through fifth innings, but ran into some difficulty in the top of the sixth. Ryan Raslowsky singled up the middle to start the frame, and following a Cal Vogelsang fly out to left, Barry doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. But Stuart got Williams to line out to short, and after a walk to Steven Keller loaded the bases, Nate Ring popped out to right field to end the threat.
UC Riverside extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth, as David Andriese doubled to right with nobody out, Prestridge sacrificed him to third, and one batter later, Zarate singled to right to put the Highlanders up 3-1.
The Matadors put a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but Stuart worked his way out of the jam once again as he stranded Marty Bowen at third thanks to a strikeout and a line out to left.
Stuart pitched a scoreless eighth and turned the game over to Ben Doucette in the top of the ninth. Doucette retired the side in order in picking up his second save of the season.
The Highlanders remain at home this week as they host Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, May 9. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex.
