Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team set a Division I program record for wins with a 10-0 romp of Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon in Big West Conference action at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders improve to 23-27 overall and 6-12 in league play, while the Matadors drops to 10-39, 5-13. The 23 wins by UCR are the most in the team's Division I history, bettering the mark of 22 set by the 2006 and 2010 squads.
UC Riverside also swept the conference series from CSUN for the first time in the program's DI history. The sweep is also the first in league play since 2002 when the Highlanders swept Sacramento State on May 4-5.
The Highlanders celebrated Senior Day prior to first pitch, and sent the class of 2012 off in style by scoring six runs in the second inning and four in the third. Casey Suda earned the shutout win in the circle, giving up four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
UC Riverside got out on top in the second as Dionne Anderson led off with a walk, and singles by Jojo Mendoza and Kaylie Atkinson loaded the bases.
Shavon Bates' RBI ground out scored Anderson from third, and a sac fly from Yesenia Duenas sent Mendoza home.
Ariel Shore then singled to put runners at first and third, and Brittany Keeney homered for the second time of the series, a three-RBI shot off the scoreboard as UCR's lead grew to 5-0.
That prompted a pitching change, and the Highlanders rally continued as Kayla White drew a walk, and Jessica Vasser doubled to send her home for the 6-0 advantage.
The next inning, the Matadors had runners at first and second with no outs, but UC Riverside weathered the rally by turning a double play, and getting a lineout to end the frame.
In the bottom of that inning, Mendoza blasted a one-out shot over the left center field fence for the second home run of her career, opening a 7-0 lead.
That prompted a second pitching change, but Shavon Bates drew a walk to extend the inning. Duenas then reached on an error by the CSUN pitcher, putting runners on first and second for Shore.
Shore then doubled down the right field line, and a throwing error by CSUN's fielder allowed both runners to score for the 9-0 lead.
Keeney then flied a ball into left field, but the leftfielder dropped it, allowing Shore to score on the error for a 10-0 UCR advantage.
The Matadors had runners at the corners with two outs in the fourth inning, but again UCR got out of the jam. With two outs in the next inning, Suda gave way to Amy Lwin in the circle. Lwin would eventually load the bases with two walks and a single, but used a fielder's choice to end the frame, securing the 10-0 victory.
Shore went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs, while Mendoza went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Highlanders now conclude the regular season on the road with a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal Poly beginning on Friday, May 11 in San Luis Obispo, CA.
