Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Villanova 0
Tempe, AZ - Freshman Ashley Cox recorded 13 kills and Shelby LeDuff added 12 as the UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded play at the ASU Sheraton Invitational Saturday evening with a 3-0 victory over Villanova. The Highlanders (5-8) won in straight sets 25-19, 25-20, and 25-17.
"Today was about playing with effort, communicating, and having no regrets," Head Coach Ron Larsen stated. "It was exciting to see the change in their competitiveness when they were focused on working hard. The matches this weekend pointed out the necessity of this mindset. Now we have to be able to continue this attitude over time."
LeDuff posted her third double-double of the season as she added 11 digs to go along with her 12 kills. Amanda Vialpando was just shy of her third double-double of the year as she recorded 11 digs and nine kills.
The Highlanders led wire-to-wire in set one, opening a 5-0 advantage on two Cox kills, kills from LeDuff and Annishia McKoy, and a Villanova (5-8) error.
UCR pushed its lead out to 15-8, but the Wildcats scored four straight to cut the advantage to three, 15-12. The teams traded points until UC Riverside turned a three-point lead back to six, 20-14, capped off by a Cox service ace.
The Wildcats never got closer than four points the rest of the set as the Highlanders had the 25-19 victory in hand.
Villanova had the early lead in set two, but UC Riverside rallied from a 12-10 deficit to take a 16-12 advantage, using four Cox kills during the run.
The Highlanders lead was cut to just one, however, at 19-18, but a Wildcats service error ignited a 6-2 run for UCR as they went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-20 win.
UC Riverside again rallied in set three, turning a 3-3 tie into a 10-4 lead. The Highlanders margin never dipped below five the rest of the way, as UCR closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.
The Highlanders now return home for their Big West Conference opener against nationally ranked Hawai'i on Friday, September 21 at 7 pm at the SRC Arena.
