Hefflin Wins Highlander Invitational As Women's Cross Country Finishes Second

Riverside--UC Riverside's Raquel Hefflin won the 5k Highlander Invitational Saturday morning, helping the Women's Cross Country Team to a second place finish out of nine squads. Complete Results
Hefflin's personal-best 5k time of 17:09.5 was nine seconds ahead of the next runner, Wyoming's Holly Page (17:18.2). UCR had three runners in the top-10 as Jzsanette Lindstrom finished sixth in 17:38.5, and Alisha Brown came in eighth with a time of 17:53.1.
Wyoming earned the team championship totaling 54 points, while the Highlanders were second with 64 points--just one point ahead of third-place Cal State Fullerton (65).
San Diego State came in fourth place (92) followed by USC in fifth (130), UC Irvine in sixth (134), Long Beach State in seventh (172), Cal State Northridge in eighth (230), and CSU Bakersfield in ninth (272).
Other finishers for UCR are Valerie Mares in 21st with a time of 18:20.0, and Brianna Simmons in 32nd in 18:35.8.
Brooke McCandless was five spots back, finishing 37th with a time of 18:44.9, while Maryann Holliday was 39th in 18:47.1. Martina Chase-Rios finished 49th with at time of 19:11.0 while Elizabeth Guzman rounded out the squad in 62nd with 19:31.0.
The Highlanders now have a few weeks to prepare for the Big West Conference Championship slated for Saturday, November 2 at 10:40 am PT in San Luis Obispo, CA.
