Riverside—UC Riverside Women's Cross Country and Track athlete Valerie Mares is in her freshman season with the blue and gold, and we here at gohighlanders.com got to know her a little better this fall via our Highlander Highlights series.

... is from Ontario, CA
   ... would love to have witnessed Jackie Robinson playing for the Dodgers
      ... is majoring in liberal studies
           ... is one of five siblings
            ... enjoys reading V.C. Andrew books
                   ... loves listening to country music
Valerie's favorite quote is, "When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, that's when you'll be successful."
She believes the secret to a great life is loving what you do. Her two mottos in life are "Hakuna Matata" and "live life with no regrets."
Valerie got her worst injury from a concussion during her junior year of high school after colliding heads with another girl in a soccer match.
She is also interested in learning the American Sign Language.
