Crain Named To Big West Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team

Irvine—The Big West Conference released its women's basketball preseason media poll Wednesday, selecting Cal Poly to take home the 2013-14 crown. The Mustangs garnered 177 points and 17 first-place votes, beating out Hawai'i for second with 159 points and three first-place votes.
The media panel also selected a six-player preseason all-conference team, consisting of UC Riverside's Brittany Crain, UC Davis' Sydnee Fipps, Cal State Northridge's Ashlee Guay, Hawai'i's Kamilah Jackson, Long Beach State's Alex Sanchez, and Cal Poly's Molly Schlemer.
Cal Poly returns 11 letter winners, headlined by reigning Player of the Year Schlemer, to a program that will look to defend its first Big West crown, while the Rainbow Wahine are looking to add a Big West title in year two of their return to the league.
Following the Mustangs and 'Bows, Cal State Northridge was picked to finish third in the poll with 121 points. They were closely followed by Long Beach State in fourth with 120 points, while UC Santa Barbara was selected fifth with 100 points.
UC Davis was picked sixth garnering 72 points with Cal State Fullerton (59) coming in seventh, UC Irvine (54) in eighth, and the Highlanders (38) in ninth.
UC Riverside will be without the league's leading scorer last year, guard Tre'Shonti Nottingham, who graduated following a four-year campaign which saw her finish sixth on the Highlanders all-time scoring list.
The Highlanders welcome back 2012-13 Big West Freshman of the Year Brittany Crain, who finished second on the squad in scoring averaging 14.3. points per game. All-Big West Conference selection Natasha Hadley also returns for her senior campain in 2013-14.
UC Riverside gets the 2013-14 season underway with an exhibition game against California Baptist University on Saturday, November 2 at 3 pm PT at the SRC Arena. The regular season tips on the road at the Hawkeye Challenge against host Iowa on Friday, November 8 at 4 pm in Iowa City, Iowa.
