The Highlanders shot 290-292 and lead California Baptist (590) by eight strokes, while fellow Big West Conference foe Cal State Northridge is in third with a 593.
"I am so proud of the entire team and what they were able to accomplish today," Head Coach Brent Perkins exclaimed. "All the hard work that we've done in practice early this season came together on the first day of the tournament."
Both of UCR's rounds smashed the previous school record for low-round of 295, set most recently in the 2008-09 season. Additionally, the two-round score of 582 betters the previous school record for lowest 36-hole round of 598, set during the 2007-08 season.
Individually, the Highlanders have two players in the top-5 with Brittani Ferraro leading the field with a six-under-par 138 (70-68), and Savannah Vilaubi in fourth place with a two-under 142 (68-74).
Both girls' scores of 68 tie the school record for individual single-round low, last set during the 2011-12 season.
Other scores for UC Riverside include a 148 (75-73) for Haley Wian, who is tied for ninth place; a 156 (79-77) for Isabelle Shee, tied for 25th; and a 162 (77-85) for Paris Griffith, tie for 41st.
Playing as individuals, Tina Nagai is tied for 25th shooting 156 (78-78), Hannah Lee is tied for 29th with a 158 (76-82), and Yuri Ahn is tied for 35th with a 160 (78-82).
"The returners exceeded my expectations in the first event this season," Perkins continued. "To come out and shoot such great scores on the first day is impressive. I am also extremely expressed by the newcomers maturity and their toughness.
"The goal for tomorrow is to remain confident and positive and play our best, and hopefully come out with a win in our host tournament."
The tournament concludes Tuesday morning with a final 18-hole round beginning at 7:30 am PT.
