Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team's 2013 season came to an end Thursday afternoon as the Highlanders dropped a 3-1 decision at UC Davis (Box Score). The Aggies advance to the Big West Conference Semifinals with the win where they will take on UC Irvine.
Despite the loss, UCR posted its third straight winning season at 9-8-3, and made its second appearance in the conference tournament in the last three seasons. The Highlanders overall record since 2011 is 28-22-7, and they have four victories over top 25 competition during that time span including a 1-0 win over #13 Cal State Northridge on November 2 of this year.
The Aggies got on the board quickly Tuesday as Matt Sheldon fed Kevin Schulte on the left post with just 3:35 gone in the match to put UC Davis up 1-0.
UC Riverside answered in the ninth minute of play when Jonathan Tovar headed in Romario Lomeli's cross for his first score of the season.
As the clock was winding down on the first period, Ian Palmer's shot ricocheted off the left post, and Dashiell MacNamara was there to collect the rebound sending the Aggies into the locker room at halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Palmer recorded his second assist of the day with just 3:46 gone in the second period, as his cross to the top of the box found its way to Nick Grigoriev who gave UC Davis what would prove to be an insurmountable 3-1 advantage.
