11/15/2013 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team battled Long Beach State Thursday evening, splitting the first two sets, and serving at set point in the fourth, but the 49ers closed out the match scoring the final three points to secure the 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24 win (Box Score).
The Highlanders and 49ers were tied at 16 in set number one, but Long Beach State closed with a 9-1 run to take a one-set lead.
UC Riverside (1-23, 0-13) struck back in the second as neither team led by more than two points until midway through the set. Tied at nine, the Highlanders scored four of the next five points thanks to three kills by Tyler Dorsey and one by Annishia McKoy.
Three points later, UCR had its biggest lead of the set 15-11, courtesy of another McKoy kill and a 49ers attack error.
The Niners (14-11, 7-5) recovered after calling time out, scoring four straight to tie the score, but they were never able to regain the lead. Tied at 22, Dorsey recorded her fifth kill of the set, and two points later, McKoy put the Highlanders on the board with her ninth kill of the night.
Long Beach State came out with a vengeance in the third set as they turned a 3-3 tie into an 11-3 advantage. The Highlanders were never able to get closer than six the rest of the way, and the 49ers regained the lead two sets to one.
Early in the fourth, it looked as if the teams were headed for a decisive fifth set as UCR doubled up the Niners, 14-7. But Long Beach State started chipping away at the lead knotting the score at 16. The score was still tied at 23 when Dorsey recorded her 13th and final kill of the match to bring up set point for UCR. Unfortunately, it was also the final point of the evening for the Highlanders as the 49ers scored the final three points of the night to wrap up the victory.
UC Riverside has three more matches remaining on the schedule beginning with a road trip next weekend to Cal Poly (Friday, November 22 at 7 pm) and UC Santa Barbara (Saturday, November 23 at 7 pm). The final match of the season is slated for Friday, November 29 as the Highlanders host nationally-ranked Hawai'i.
