#24 Cal State Northridge Tops UC Riverside Volleyball, 25-19, 25-19, 25-17

Northridge, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team faced a tough challenge against No. 24 Cal State Northridge (19-4, 9-1) on Saturday evening, falling in three sets in Big West Conference action. Despite hitting with a .245 attack percentage--UCR's best percentage in 10 Big West games so far this season--the Matadors earned the 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17 victory.
Annishia McKoy led a balanced scoring attack for the Highlanders (1-21, 0-10) with 10 kills, while Tyer Dorsey and Ashley Cox both added nine.
The first set was a back and forth battle early on as neither team led by more than three points. UCR rallied back from a 12-9 deficit by scoring four straight to go up 13-12, capped off by a Cox kill.
After trading points, the Matadors turned a 15-14 hole into a 19-15 advantage, but the Highlanders cut the lead in half following kills from Dorsey and Cristina Maietta. UC Riverside could not continue its rally, however, as consecutive points from CSUN again made it a four-point set, 21-17, en route to the 25-19 win.
Cal State Northridge opened an early 10-2 lead in the second set, but UC Riverside made a massive run, scoring 11 of the next 14 points to tie the set at 13-13. Five different Highlanders played recorded at least one kill during the rally, while Nae Bender added back-to-back service aces.
After two more tie scores, the last at 15-15, CSUN rallied taking an 18-15 advantage, and pushing it to five, at 22-17. The Highlanders offense could not counter with enough points at that juncture in the set, as the Matadors earned the win, 25-19.
The third set opened similary to the second, with Cal State Northridge taking the early advantage at 9-1. The Highlanders eventually cut the lead to three, 18-15, but could not mount another rally as the Matadors concluded the set with a 25-17 victory.
UC Riverside now continues its three-match road swing at Cal State Fullerton next Saturday, November 9 for a 7 pm PT contest in Fullerton, CA.
