Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team ended its 2013 season Friday evening with a 3-0 loss to #12 Hawai'i (23-4) by the scores of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18 (Box Score).
Prior to the start of the match, the Highlanders (2-26, 1-15) celebrated senior night honoring the two members of the Class of 2014: Jessica Moncayo and Annishia McKoy.
UCR came out of the gate strong in set one, opening up a 5-1 lead using two kills, two blocks, and a UH error. The Highlanders continued their advantage and were up 13-11 midway through the set, when the Rainbow Wahine ralled scoring six consecutive to go up 17-13.
A kill from Ashley Cox stopped the run, and UC Riverside cut the margin to two, 19-17, but could not get any closer as Hawai'i completed the come-from-behind, 25-20 win.
The second set was close in the beginning with five tie scores through 5-5. But UH used another rally, scoring four straight and seven of eight to take a 12-6 advantage. After a Highlanders timeout, the blue and gold scored three points to cut the lead to 12-9, but the Rainbow Wahine countered with three consecutive to push the lead back to six, 15-9.
Following a UCR point, Hawai'i scored three more unanswered points and held the Highlanders to just five the rest of the way, winning 25-15 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started similarly to the first with UC Riverside taking an early lead, and maintaining it at 10-7. But UH had another rally up its sleeve, scoring three straight to tie the set at 10. The teams then traded points with three more tie scores though 14-14.
Hawai'i scored three more points at that juncture, and although the Highlanders cut it to one, 17-16, they could not stop the Rainbow Wahine from closing out the set and match, winning 25-18.
UCR had balanced scoring as Cox and Fabiana Rosas recorded seven kills apiece, and McKoy and Tyler Dorsey both added six. UH's Emily Hartong tallied 20 kills to lead all players.
