Cal State Fullerton Tops Men's Basketball In Highlanders Conference Home Opener

Riverside—UC Riverside fell to the Cal State Fullerton Titans 77- 47 at the Student Rec Center Monday night. Junior Cleavon Barlow finished with 11 points to lead the Highlanders who drop to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big West on the season.
UCR was unable to match the hot outside shooting by Cal State Fullerton (9-4, 2-0 Big West) all night long. CSF shot 28-of-59 (47.5%) and was led by Josh Akognon's game-high 30 points after he knocked down 7 of 11 three point attempts in the game. A tough Fullerton defense pressured the Highlanders for most of the game, holding the young UC Riverside squad to 16-of-59 (27.1%) shooting including 3-for-20 (15.0%) from beyond the arc.
Akognon went off from the outside with 22 first half points including all five of CSF's three's as the Ttitans shot 16-of-33 (48.5%) to took a 41-25 lead at the break.
Senior Larry Cunningham paced the Highlanders with seven points as UCR struggled to get anything to fall, shooting 8-of-25 (32.0%) through the first 20 minutes. UCR worked hard underneath the basket, matching the Titans with 20 first half rebounds.
In the second half is more of the same, hot shooting by CSF and shots that wouldn't drop for the Highlanders. UCR shot 8-of-34 (23.5%) and 0-for-11 from behind the three-point line in the final 20 minutes.
Larry Cunningham added 10 points, sophomore Sean Cunningham finished with nine points and seven boards, and junior Benoit Bekono brought down a game-high eight boards.
UCR does not play again until next Wednesday, January 16th, when they host Cal State Northridge at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Rec Center.
