Highlanders Can't Stop Second-Half Run By UC Davis In 70-56 Loss

Davis, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team led by one point with just under 13 minutes remaining Thursday at UC Davis, but could not stop a late surge by the Aggies in a 70-56 defeat at The Pavilion.
The Highlanders fall to 11-13 overall and 4-9 in Big West play, while UC Davis improves to 11-15, 6-8.
Brittany Crain got the Highlanders on board first as she nailed a three-pointer 26 seconds into the game, but the Aggies responded with an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to go up 8-3 at the 14:26 mark.
Down 17-12 six minutes later, it was UC Riverside's turn for a run as they scored seven straight points to take a 19-17 advantage with 5:30 remaining in the half.
Despite being outscored 10-4 over the remainder of the period, and being outshot 42.3 percent to 25.0 percent in the half, UCR trailed UC Davis 27-23 at the break.
The Highlanders battled back to start the second half, taking a 36-35 lead after a Natasha Hadley free throw at the 14:54 mark, and a 40-39 advantage after a Tre'Shonti Nottingham jumper with 12:47 to go.
A 9-0 run by UC Davis over the next two minutes proved fatal, however, as UC Riverside never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
For the game, the Aggies hit 44.6 percent of their shots while limiting the Highlanders to 29.8 percent from the field. Sydnee Fipps led all players with 27 points, while Crain had 18 to lead UC Riverside.
The Highlanders continue their road trip with a Saturday, February 23 meeting against Pacific at 4 pm PT in Stockton, CA.
