Sacramento—UC Riverside pitcher Dylan Stuart scattered seven hits and struck out five batters Friday afternoon as the Highlanders beat Sacramento State, 2-1, in the first of a four-game weekend series (Box Score).
Eddie Young drew a one-out walk in the top of the first and promptly stole second. Clayton Prestridge followed with a single to left, extending his hitting streak to five games, bringing Young plateward for the first run of the game.
Two innings later, Young was involved in the Highlanders' (2-3) second run of the day. Nick Vilter was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after Devyn Bolasky sacrificed Vilter to second, Young ripped a double to right center. Vilter came around to score giving UC Riverside a 2-0 lead.
Prestridge then hit a grounder to short, and Young tried to advance to third, but got caught in a run down. After a hard tag by second baseman Andrew Ayers, Young and Ayers got into a scuffle causing both benches to clear, When the dust settled, Young, Ayers and UC Riverside catcher Drake Zarate were ejected from the game.
Meanwhile, the Hornets (1-3) put runners on base in each of the first four innings, but each time, Stuart was able to get out of the jam.
He retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings, but in the seventh, Justin Higley doubled to left center to start the inning, and one batter later, advanced to third on a Dane Fujinaka infield single. Scotty Burcham lined out to right field scoring Higley cutting the Highlanders advantage in half.
Stuart retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth, however, giving UC Riverside its second win of the season.
The Highlanders and Vikings continue their series with a Saturday double header beginning at 11 am PT
