Softball Opens Season With 10-2 Victory Over Southern Miss

Fresno, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team opened the 2013 season Friday afternoon with a 10-2 victory over Southern Mississippi in game one of the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament.
The Golden Eagles (1-3) scored two runs in the third inning for the first score of the game, but the Highlanders (1-0) put seven runs on the board in the bottom of that frame, and added one in the fourth and two more in the sixth to earn the victory.
Nicolette Lujan started off the rally for UCR in the third with a walk to lead off the inning. Kayla White singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw, pushing Lujan to third. Ariel Shore then reached on an error, scoring Lujan for the first run.
The bases were loaded after Dionne Anderson reached on a fielder's choice, and Ashley Ercolano drew a walk to tie the game at two as White headed home.
That prompted a pitching change from Southern Miss, but it didn't help as Brittanie Akey singled up the middle, scoring two runners to make it 4-2. With one out, another walk loaded the bases, and Meagan Esteban drove two more home with her single up the middle.
Kaylie Atkinson pinch hit for Lujan, and grounded out to second base, but got another runner across as the Highlanders made it a 7-2 ballgame.
An inning later, Shore led off with a triple, and was brought home on a sac fly from Anderson to give UC Riverside an 8-2 advantage. In the sixth, Ercolano doubled down the left field line, scoring Anderson who had previously singled. With Ercolano on third, Marissa Escalante doubled to right field, scoring the runner and ending the game, as the Highlanders won by the eight-run mercy rule, 10-2.
Alyssa Razo pitched all six innings for the blue and gold, giving up six hits and two runs in the victory. Kimberly Wagner was saddled with the loss for the Eagles, allowing five runs in 2.0 innings.
The Highlanders have just a few hours off before playing host Fresno State on Friday at 7 pm at Bulldog Diamond.
