Box Score—UC Riverside 8, Bethune-Cookman 5
Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team erased early deficits in both games of its doubleheader Wednesday against Bethune-Cookman, winning 12-4 in five innings in game one, and earning an 8-5 victory in game two.
The Highlanders improve to 13-13 on the season and are on a six game winning streak.
In the first game, the Wildcats touched UCR starter Alyssa Razo for one run and two hits in the top half of the first inning, but Kayla White led off with a triple in the second, and scored the tying run on Natalie Sanchez' sac fly.
But Bethune Cookman continued to hit Razo, and scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth to go up 4-1.
The Highlanders responded with an offensive explosion in the bottom of that frame, batting around the order and scoring nine runs on seven hits to stake Razo to a 10-4 lead. And in the fifth, UCR added two more runs to earn the 12-4, five-inning run rule victory.
Eight of the nine Highlanders hitters recorded at least one hit, with Brittanie Akey and White each posting three hits. The 12 runs scored is a season-high for UCR, and the most since a 16-run outburst against Eastern Kentucky on March 7, 2012.
For the second straight game, Bethune-Cookman got on the board first in game two, sending four across in the second inning. In the bottom of that frame, UCR got two of those runs back, as White homered to make it a 4-1 score, and Sanchez came around on Meagan Esteban's RBI single up the middle to cut the lead in half, 4-2.
Two innings later, the Highlanders tied it at 4-4. Back-to-back singles from Ashley Ercolano and White put runners at first and second, and Sanchez' sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Akey then came through with a single to left field, plating both runners for the tie.
In the fifth, UC Riverside put an additional four runs on the board to go on top, 8-4. Anderson led off the frame with a single, and came home on an error by the Wildcats' third baseman, who was attempting to throw out Shore at first. The ball ricocheted off Shore's helmet into the outfield, and Anderson advanced all the way home.
With two outs and two runners on, Sanchez doubled to bring home both runs, followed by a double from Akey to score Sanchez for the final run of the inning.
Bethune-Cookman threatened in the top of the sixth, plating one to cut the lead to 8-5. But relief pitcher Taylor Alvarez got out of the jam, and retired the Wildcats in order in the seventh to earn the save.
White went 3-for-3 in the game while Sanchez was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
The Highlanders continue their homestand hosting the Highlander Classic starting Friday, March 15 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
