Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team (15-20, 0-5) opened the home portion of its Big West Conference schedule Friday with a doubleheader loss to Long Beach State, 14-11 and 10-2.
In the first game, there were 27 combined hits and two grand slams in the 14-11 slug fest. The Highlanders started off the hitting in the bottom of the first as Ashley Ercolano's single up the middle plated runners from second and third.
LBSU was quick to counter as they put a five-spot on the board in the third, capitalizing on four runs and two UCR errors.
With runners at first and third, Brianna Stephan's RBI ground out cut the lead in half, 2-1. A single and a walk then loaded the bases for Karli Sandoval, who singled to bring two runners home giving the 49ers a 3-2 lead.
With two outs and two runners on, a fielding error in the Highlanders outfield extended the inning allowing two more runners to cross home plate as Long Beach State went up 5-2.
UC Riverside matched the 49ers in the fourth by putting a five-spot on the board.
Marissa Escalante led off the frame with a solo home run to left field as the lead was cut to 5-3. The Highlanders then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, a single, and a walk, and Kayla White drilled a grand slam to left field to put the Highlanders on top, 7-5.
But the lead would change hands again, as both teams scored four runs each in the fifth inning.
The 49ers had the bases loaded with two outs when Stephan hit a bases-clearing triple to make it an 8-7 score. Stephan would then score on a wild pitch to lift LBSU to a 9-7 advantage.
Ariel Shore led off the fifth for UCR with a walk, and moved to second on a sac bunt from Escalante. Kaylie Atkinson came to bat as pinch hitter, and singled to left field to bring Shore home. Meagan Esteban then singled, and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Nicolette Lujan continued the offense as her single scored the tying run, 9-9.
Dionne Anderson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second, scoring Esteban to put the Highlanders on top, 10-9. After stealing third, Anderson was brought home by Pickett's single to left field giving UCR an 11-9 advantage.
For the fifth time, the momentum shifted once again as Long Beach State retook the lead in the top of the seventh, 14-11, using a grand slam by Darian Tautalafua which would prove to be the game-winner.
In the bottom of the seventh, UC Riverside got runners at first and second on an error and a single, but a double play quickly made it two outs, and a final out ended the 14-11 slug fest in favor of the 49ers.
Long Beach State continued its hitting into the second game of the doubleheader, scoring four runs in the first. A walk and a single put runners at first and second for Hannah De Gaetano, who doubled to right center plating one run. Tautalafau then connected on a homer making it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Highlanders got one run back in the third as Anderson scored from second on Ercolano's single up the middle. But the 49ers scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 7-1. In the seventh, Tautalafau again homered for LBSU, knocking in three as the lead grew to 10-1.
UC Riverside responded in the bottom of that frame as Ercolano hit a sac fly that scored Pickett from third, cutting the lead to 10-2. That score would hold up, however, as the 49ers took the series 2-0 with their 10-2 victory.
The final game of the three-game series gets underway at 12 pm PT on Saturday at Amy S. Harrison Field.
