Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded its three-game series with Long Beach State falling 6-2 Saturday afternoon as the 49ers (23-14, 5-1) earned the sweep at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders drop to 0-6 in Big West play and 15-21 overall.
UCR starting pitcher Ashley Ercolano worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning after allowing a lead-off double and two walks sandwiched around two outs. Ercolano then helped her cause in the bottom of the first as she drove in Kayla White from third base to put the Highlanders on top, 1-0.
The 49ers tie the game in the next inning on Shayna Kimbrough's sac fly, and took a 2-1 lead in the third as Loni Tyler's single to right center brought Karli Sandoval home.
In the fourth, LBSU continued its hitting as an error and consecutive singles loaded the bases for Sandoval, who drove in two runs with her single to left field, extending the 49ers lead to 4-1.
Two innings later, Long Beach State scored a pair of runs on a bases-loaded fielder's choice and a sac fly to right field, as the margin grew to 6-1.
UC Riverside got one run back in the bottom of the sixth as White drilled a solo home run over the left field fence to cut the gap to 6-2.
And in the seventh, pinch-hitter Kaylie Atkinson singled down the left field line with one out to put a baserunner on. But consecutive outs ended any comeback bid for the Highlanders as LBSU earned the 6-2 victory.
Ercolano was saddled with the lossing allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in 7.0 innings of work. Amanda Hansen was credited with the win for The Beach giving up seven hits and two runs.
Next up for the Highlanders is a three-game series at nationally ranked Hawai'i beginning on Friday, April 5 in Honolulu.
